# Setting up ads tracking for Atlas Online

> Track which Meta and Google ads lead to orders on your Atlas Online ordering site.

Atlas Online sends tracking events so you can see which ads lead to orders. Atlas installs your Meta Pixel or Google Tag Manager (GTM) container. You don't need to add code to your ordering site.

## Get your tracking installed

You can use Meta Pixel, GTM, or both. Have admin access to your advertising accounts before setting up campaigns.

1. Copy the ID for the service you use:
   * **Meta Pixel** for Facebook and Instagram ads: open **Data sources** in Meta Events Manager. Copy your Pixel (dataset) ID.
   * **Google Tag Manager** for Google Ads, Google Analytics 4 (GA4), and other tags: copy your container ID. It looks like `GTM-XXXXXXX`.
2. Send the ID to your Atlas WhatsApp group. Atlas installs it across your ordering journey and confirms when it's live.
3. For GTM, add your GA4 or Google Ads tags inside your container. Set their triggers using the events below, then publish the container. Unpublished tags won't fire.

If you already use GTM, add your Google Ads tag (`AW-XXXXXXXXX`) inside it rather than installing it separately. If an old container is installed, tell Atlas which container to keep so events aren't counted twice.

## Events your site sends

| Diner action | Meta Pixel event | GTM event |
| - | - | - |
| Page loads | `PageView` | GTM page view |
| Item added to cart | `AddToCart` | `add_to_cart` |
| Cart opened | Not sent | `view_cart` |
| Checkout started | `InitiateCheckout` | `begin_checkout` |
| Payment details entered | Not sent | `add_payment_info` |
| Order paid and confirmed | `Purchase` | `purchase` |

GTM events are available in the data layer. This is a shared list of site actions your tags can read. These events don't configure your advertising conversions automatically.

The purchase event fires on the order confirmation page, only after payment succeeds.

## Connect your campaigns to purchases

* Set each Meta ad set or Google Ads conversion action to track purchases, not page views or add-to-cart events.
* Use the same Pixel ID or GTM container you shared with Atlas.
* Link ads directly to your Atlas ordering site. If ads land on your brand website first, load the same pixel or container there too. For example, `brand.com` and `order.brand.com`.
* For Google Ads, add a **Conversion Linker** tag on all pages in GTM. This helps connect ad clicks to purchases.

For GA4 journeys across different root domains, ask your marketing team to [configure cross-domain measurement](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/10071811).

Atlas's installation covers your Atlas ordering site. Purchases on other ordering platforms need tracking set up with those platforms.

## Check your tracking

### Meta Pixel

1. Open your pixel in **Events Manager** and check the last seven days for the events above.
2. In **Ads Manager**, add a **Results** or **Purchases** column. Purchases can take time to appear after showing in Events Manager.

### Google Tag Manager

1. Open your ordering site in **Google Tag Assistant** and go through to checkout. Check that your container loads and the events appear.
2. Check a real, paid order in Tag Assistant or GA4 realtime to verify the purchase event.

## Troubleshooting

| What you see | What to check |
| - | - |
| Purchase appears in Events Manager, but not Ads Manager | Check the campaign's purchase event, pixel, and landing link. Allow time for reporting to update. |
| No Purchase in Events Manager after paid orders | Send Atlas your Pixel ID and an Events Manager screenshot so we can check the installation. |
| GTM tags don't fire | Publish your container and check its event triggers in Tag Assistant. If the container is missing, send Atlas your GTM ID and a Tag Assistant screenshot. |
| Events counted twice | Ask Atlas to remove old containers. Remove duplicate GA4 tags inside your GTM container. |
